Clean Water Lab Day: Introducing students to wastewater treatment

January 17, 2025

On January 15, Engineering Tomorrow teamed up with Engineers Without Borders USA, an organization moving the needle on access to clean water worldwide, to teach 6,400 high school students across the country the fundamentals of wastewater treatment.

During the lab, all students participating designed, tested, and analyzed the results from their own small water filtration system, with all materials shipped to schools for free. Guest presenters included Engineers Without Borders USA Senior Program Engineer Natalie Celmo, Chief Programs Officer Melissa Montgomery, and Program Engineer Brooke Poppe. Engineering Tomorrow staff engineer Joanna Caudle also joined students in person at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls school in Bethesda, MD, to lead them through the lab.

Engineering Tomorrow has reached over 1 million students through its engineer-led programming that inspires students to pursue engineering careers they may have not considered. You can read more about the event here in Wastewater Digest and here in Water Online.
