Eighth-grade students from the ACE program at Memorial Middle School, as well as seniors from the CGHS chapter of the Math Honor Society, visited the Museum of Mathematics in New York City last October. They participated in an educational break-out session on Knot Theory and then explored the two floors of hands-on mathematical activities. Students were able to ride a square-wheeled bike, experiment in sound design, watch animated fractals and solve puzzles. A total of 35 students attended the trip and were accompanied by Gifted and Talented Program Coordinator Melissa Hill, MAT adviser Heather Lauritano, and K-12 Math/Science Supervisor Janine Barboza.

In November, Barboza took 10 high school students to an all-day workshop at Ridgewood High School sponsored by Engineering Tomorrow, a program that educates students about the many professions in the field of engineering. Students were shown informational videos and listened to speakers from various engineering companies including General Electric. Additionally, they participated in a water purification experiment and design competition to create and test windmills in a wind tunnel.
