While women have made major breakthroughs in STEM in the past few decades, there’s still a long way to go — making visibility and mentorship more important than ever. 

In this Women’s History Month keynote, leaders in biotechnology, sustainability, and engineering innovation will share their journeys, highlighting how diverse perspectives fuel progress and why empowering the next generation of women engineers is vital to solving the challenges of tomorrow.

Meet our facilitator
Sarah Syed

Sarah Syed is a recent graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Inspired by her grandmother’s work as an OB-GYN in Pakistan, Sarah aspires to start a biotech company developing accessible interventions for historically overlooked diseases affecting women’s health.

At MIT, she studied mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer at the Grossman Lab and developed nanoscale contrast agents for early cancer detection. Previously, Sarah led the differentiation of gene-edited stem cells for allogeneic cell therapy as an intern at CRISPR Therapeutics. Sarah now works as an Associate Consultant at Kx Advisors, a firm that provides strategic and scientific expertise to clients in the healthcare and life sciences industry.

Telva M. McGruder

Telva is the Executive Director of Global Body Manufacturing Engineering at General Motors.

She leads the transformation toward automated and digital vehicle body manufacturing systems, leveraging predictive analytics to enhance safety, sustainability, efficiency, and quality across GM’s global operations. Previously, she served as GM’s Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, driving a high-performing, inclusive culture and leading initiatives that promoted equity both within the company and across its global footprint.

Over her career, Telva has held progressive leadership roles in manufacturing and facility engineering, inspiring teams to innovate in machinery, tool, and building design, energy efficiency, project execution, maintenance, quality, operations, and labor negotiations. She earned her BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and continues to dedicate her time as a board member for organizations that expand STEM opportunities for youth. In addition, she serves as a mentor and advisor on sustainability, leadership, and health and safety, while cherishing life experiences with her family.

Shaniel Bowen

Shaniel Bowen is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Mount Sinai, where she develops MRI biomarkers and biomedical tools to assess female genito-pelvic health. She earned her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh and previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT. Shaniel is also dedicated to advancing women’s health education and expanding STEM opportunities for underrepresented communities.

Kelly DiPucchio

Kelly DiPucchio retired from General Motors after 34 years, most recently serving as Vice President of Global Manufacturing Engineering. She led 5,000 team members in launching new vehicles and propulsion systems while advancing automation, AI, and analytics in manufacturing. Known for her innovation and cross-functional leadership, she also championed mentoring and expanding opportunities for women in engineering throughout her career.

Kristen Siemen

Kristen Siemen retired from General Motors in 2024 as Vice President of Sustainable Workplaces and Chief Sustainability Officer. She helped drive the company’s vision of a zero-emissions future and carbon neutrality by 2040. A longtime GM leader with a career spanning engineering and sustainability, she has been recognized among the world’s top CSOs and continues to shape the field through advisory board service and industry leadership.
