Lab day event

Remediated Sites

Decontaminating and Restoring an Environment

April 2, 2025|10am–1pm EST
what you will learn

In this lab, students will learn how engineers from different disciplines work together to monitor and clean up sites that have become contaminated by pollutants.

Using the engineering design process, students will model an oil spill and conduct experiments using different clean up techniques they learn about in the lab.

Meet our keynote speaker
Noel Blackburn

Noel Blackburn is a Workforce Development Advocate and works to create environments where all individuals are welcomed, respected, and valued for their diverse perspectives.

Blackburn has played a pivotal role in establishing and strengthening connections with over 75 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and minority-serving institutions (MSIs). He developed programs such as InCREASE to provide greater access to DOE national laboratories for underrepresented groups.

An engineer by training, Blackburn initially worked on environmental remediation projects before transitioning to STEM education.

Blackburn recently earned an Advanced Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. He had previously earned a Bachelors in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from CUNY-City College of New York.

what is a lab day?

Lab Days are live, virtual field trips.

3 hours live, available later on demand

Event type

No-cost, hands-on live-streamed event

Your students will come together virtually with other classes all over the country to learn about a specific topic in engineering and complete their own related projects.
Participate live for the event — or attend as much as you can and watch the rest on demand.
